Why Does Asparagus Make Your Pee Smell?

Have you ever wondered why asparagus makes your urine smell funky? Well we’re here to share that with you today. But first, let’s talk about how awesome asparagus really is!

Asparagus cultivation began in Egypt more than 2,000 years ago for medicinal purposes. Its name was derived from the Persian term “asparag,” meaning “shoot.”

Asparagus provides a good source of fiber, folate, vitamins A, C, E and K, as well as chromium, a trace mineral that enhance the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells. It also contains a rich source of glutathione, a detoxifying compound that helps break down carcinogens and other harmful compounds like free radicals. This is why eating asparagus may help protect against and fight certain forms of cancer, such as bone, breast, and colon cancer.

Asparagus is normally available in white, green and purple colors. White asparagus is grown away from the sunlight and hence is deficient of it’s green color, chlorophyll. Purple asparagus is loaded with phtyochemicals and anthocyanins which provide the unique color to the vegetable.

Now to answer your question, why does asparagus make your urine smell funky?! Well, asparagus contains a unique sulphurous compound called mercaptan, that when metabolized, gives off a smell in the urine. Young asparagus contains higher concentrations of the compound so the odor is stronger after ingesting. There are, however, no harmful effects, either from the sulfuric compounds or the odor. While it is believed that most people produce these odorous compounds after eating asparagus, few people have the ability to detect the smell. Other veggies that give off this strong scent in the urine are garlic and onion.

So there you have it! Asparagus is amazing and has been around for centuries. It is loaded with nutrients and should be a staple in your diet. And don’t forget, storing it in a cup with water like a flower will keep it fresh for the week.
