Ditch the Winter Blues and Head to Miami

For most of the country, as the leaves change and start to fall this means that winter will soon be upon us. Winter brings cold air, snow, and for some of us, depression. According to the National Institute of Health, 14 percent of the US population suffers from a form of seasonal affective disorder known as the Winter Blues. This disorder is related to our body’s response to daylight. So, when light is limited as it is during the winter, people that experience the Winter Blues tend to feel sad, depressed, and exhausted.

If this sounds like you, don’t fret. All you need is a vacation to one of the warmest places in the US: Miami, Florida! Not just a place to party, Miami can provide a safe haven against the Winter Blues. So, check out some Miami activities to rejuvenate your health this winter.

Be One with Nature at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Research has shown that spending time outside surrounded by nature can help to reduce the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, lower stress levels, and increase our intake of vitamins that cheer us up. So, while in Miami, be sure to take a stroll through the grounds of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Here you will be surrounded by a world of tropical plants that are sure to lift your mood.

Dance the Night Away

Combat the Winter Blues with some moves and tunes. Dancing to upbeat and cheerful music is scientifically proven to increase mood in the short-term and long run. Since Miami is known for its clubs, there’s no shortage of places you can go to overcome your seasonal affective disorder. Head over to Purdy Lounge, Mango’s Tropical Café, or Nikki Beach to jam out and rock out while fighting against the blues.

Yoga on the Beach

Miami is lucky to have good weather, beautiful beaches, and calming oceans. So, take advantage of these aspects and take part in some yoga on the beach. The waters provide a serene environment for you to clear your mind and relax away the blues. Set up shop on the beach, or take part in a free yoga class. Bayfront Park hosts free yoga classes every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, overlooking Biscayne Bay.

When you’re blue, it may feel as though you have no way out. However, you can pack your bags and take a trip to sunny South Florida to find positive vibes and stamp out the winter blues. And don’t forget to use your Healthy Places app while you are there to find healthy dining, juice and smoothie bars, spas, wellness centers, and more!
