Foods That Are Making Your Body Too Acidic

Eating a diet of alkalizing foods is said to optimize health and body function while allowing you to fight off any diseases that may sneak up you. 

Acidic environments tend to permit illnesses to grow and manifest themselves by allowing bacteria to feed off the sugars and acids being ingested and transformed in the body.  You may be thinking, what the heck does alkaline mean in the first place?

Alkaline is the opposite of acidic.  Alkaline diets keep our tissues healthy and reduce inflammation, which is the culprit behind several diseases such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel disorders, and even cancer.  Alkalizing your body also builds and strengthens bone, thereby reducing the incidence of osteoporosis.

Your body functions best when the pH is slightly alkaline. However, the body is a very complex system that produces acid residues as byproducts of certain processes, such as digestion.  Your pH level is always adjusting as acids are constantly being produced.  These acids then require neutralization- also known as alkalization.  Implementing a plant based diet and taking natural supplements such as plant based digestive enzymes or soil based probiotics are the main ways to reduce the acidity levels.

That being said, it’s how the body reacts to certain foods that determines what foods are alkaline-forming and what foods are acid-forming. For example lemons are acidic in nature, but have an alkalizing effect on the body once they are digested. Similarly, milk is alkaline outside the body, but acidic once it is ingested.

So, in order to have a pH balance that is slightly alkaline, it is best to adopt a plant based lifestyle limiting animal products, processed sugars, packaged meals, alcohol etc.

  • Artificial sweeteners and sugar
  • Alcohol: wine, beer, liquor
  • Animal products: beef, chicken, pork
  • Breads: white, whole wheat
  • Flour
  • Fried foods
  • Processed fruit juices with added sugar
  • Dairy: cheese, ice cream, yogurt
  • Pasta
  • Seafood
  • Soft drinks
  • Table salt
  • Yeast

Below is a list of the most alkaline causing foods that you should try to eat regularly:

  • Chlorella: dark leafy greens
  • Seaweed: dulse
  • Lemons, limes
  • Lentils
  • Onions
  • Pineapples
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Raspberries
  • Sea salt, pink himalayan salt
  • Spirulina
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Tangerines
  • Freshly made vegetable juices
  • Watermelon
